How to write your first book?

Of all the questions I'm asked, the one that is asked the most is: "How did you start writing?"

My response, based on my deadpan humor would be: "With a crayon." ROFL. But on a serious note, I've been writing since forever. How did I write my first novel? I just wrote it. My first was handwritten and lost in a flood. So be it. I don't harbor resentment. Life has a way of directing us to what we do or do not need at the time.

Most recently, I opened up an archaic computer notebook, opened up notepad, and started typing. I've improved that method over time, but excuses are just that and I refuse to harbor excuses. That is the secret of writing your first book. Dismiss your excuses. Writing is the easy part. Even our ancestors who had stories to tell, took time to chisel it in stone. Creating your story is only the beginning. The rest of your journey is the actual tale. Are you willing to chisel it in stone if need be or will you find an excuse and blame society? If you truly have a story that needs to be told, you'll find a way. I did. Oh...did I mention I was an American Woman living in a Muslim country who wrote a controversial religious speculative story as my first book? Yea...I risked persecution. What's your excuse? Write your story.

 Best wishes

Reviews: Everything & Nothing

Reviews: Everything & Nothing

As I sit back, read, relish and watch…I've learned a thing or two. While reading and watching, I've realized one important truth: negative reviews seem to give more insight to the reader and reviewer than it does to the author's work.

Imagine this: You've seen the preview for a movie. You anticipate the release, you make plans, you talk to friends, you discuss, you prepare and finally you schedule the perfect theater night to enjoy that one movie of the month that you've been dying to see.

Your greatly anticipated night arrives. The babysitter shows up on time, kids aren't screaming and you are ready to go. After fighting traffic, you arrive at the theater. The line winds into the parking lot. "Crap." It's not ideal, but you've waited and wondered for too long for a line to mess with your mood. So you wait. Finally you get your ticket and walk inside, eager to load up on the much awaited popcorn and soda. Again. A line. No problem, really. You can deal with it. The most important thing is the movie. You're vested in it after all. Finally, you make it through the concession line, the ticket master and now you are in your seat, ready to watch the movie you've waited for. Hopefully the kids on the third row back from you will stop barking out rude comments to one another and texting on their phones before the movie actually begins. They waited in lines as long as you did, so surely it will cease because they want to see this as badly as you do.

The theater darkens. The previews play and the movie starts. Oh, no. You waited in the ticket line and the concession line for almost an hour and you've waited for the movie to start for thirty minutes…and now you have to find a bathroom. As the cast credits role, you dash off to the bathroom, only to find another line. Ok…you've got this. The line seems fast enough, and you finally get a stall, do your business, wash your hands and run back to the movie to find your seat. Sure, you missed ten minutes, but it can't be that difficult to catch up. Right?

You absorb each visual, each word, each scene, hoping to catch up on anything you might have missed when suddenly, the person beside you needs to exit the aisle. You bend your legs back and let them pass. The teens that are three rows back comment on the size of the person exiting your aisle, while laughing, snickering and being rude. You let it go, take a deep breath and try to enjoy the rest of the show.

Three aisle exits, two bathroom breaks, five snickering teen comments, one ringing phone, and a temperature so cold it'd freeze a witch's tit later, you've had enough. You only want to get through the rest of it so that you can go home to a quiet, lovely world with screaming kids and real life, because that's where serenity happens. You might have enjoyed the movie, except the environment may have prevented it…so you really can't say. The movie was probably "so-so".

If the movie you've long awaited can be ruined by the environment you're in, can't the same happen to a book you're reading? After all, there are no visual displays. It's based entirely upon your silent reading...which requires more attention than a movie. There are NO pictures, no voices, just you and the book. Or is it you and the phone, dinner, cleaning, chores, work, meetings, screaming or sick children, barking dogs, meowing cats, crying babies, talking spouse, blaring television, running dishwasher, nosey neighbor, UPS delivery, upset stomach…etc.

So how was that book? Do you really know? Did you have time to actually read it? Perhaps it was the same as the movie?

I'd never leave a bad review. What's the old saying? Come on. You know it. Repeat after me. "If you can't say anything nice…" That's right. So, those people who don't take the time to consider that they're mad at their surroundings, their environment, their life in general and chose to leave hateful (not constructive) reviews of your work…well, consider the source. Look at the majority of the high star reviews as opposed to the minimized low star reviews. Most of the reviews that are one and two star never once mention anything significant in the storyline or book other than what is stated in the synopsis. Did they take the time to read it, or were they distracted by life? Maybe it's a scorned author that feels that another author is competition? In theory, author competition is the most ridiculous notion to exist. There is enough literature to last everyone a lifetime. EX: someone who reads YA might not read erotica or children's novels. Those that read paranormal might not care for contemporary.

I will continue to appreciate all the honest reviews that I receive. As an author, it helps future readers decide if they'll give your writing a chance. As for those reviews that are hateful, unspecific and off the mark of every other review…well…one has to wonder how crazy it was the night they pretended to give the book or movie their attention. The effort is only half the journey. Can you honestly say that your environmental surroundings or mood was not the other half? Are you absolutely sure you didn't enjoy the book, play or movie? Did it stand a fair chance? Remember: "If you can't say anything nice…"

The fireside rambling of a reader, writer and avid coffee drinker.

Step into the uncomfortable zone

Are you too comfortable?

Throughout our lives, awkward situations and uncomfortable moments inevitably happen. Your heart races, your palms grow sweaty and your mind instantly tries to scramble together a reasonable excuse to help you escape.

When you're in your comfort zone, the opposite is true. Your body is lax, your mind is at ease and you feel safe. We're creatures of habit and most of us enjoy the familiar routines we've built our lives around.

But what happens when you become too content? Do you become complacent, maybe lazy even? Do your daily deeds become thoughtless actions rather than purposeful intentions? What about family, work and friends? Have you allowed yourself to fall into a routine without considering the importance of your words and acts? How does your complacency affect those around you? Many couples have date night, poker night and various other "fun" nights to keep their relationships alive, but what about your art? How do you keep it alive?

If thoughtlessness can penetrate our daily lives, it can most assuredly infiltrate our professional ones.  When it comes to art, there aren't templates available to make your writing, your paintings or your music a best seller or hit. You've got yourself, your musings and your passion to see you through. There's no copy and paste button for life and there certainly isn't one when it comes to creating original art. Each piece should be a new beginning, a fresh start.

Does your pulse increase each time you enter your work space? Do you get excited when a new idea comes to mind? Do you scramble for ways to maneuver your non-essential tasks in order to make time to create? If not, maybe it's time to step into your 'uncomfortable' zone and reconnect with your slumbering artist. Wake up and fall in love again. The world awaits your masterpiece.

Hurry up and don't die.

When will you die?

I have no idea and neither do you.

I asked that question to make you think. What happens if tomorrow doesn't happen? Will the world know your story? Did you do everything possible so that the world gained a new voice before yours expired? Did you? Or were you too busy finding the distractions needed to keep you from sitting down and typing the words?

I've heard it said, time and time again, "I'll work on it tomorrow." That sounds like a solid plan, but what if tomorrow doesn't happen? Does the world know the story that was buried inside of you? Let me answer that. "NO." There is only one person who knows the story inside of your head and that's you, so tell it. Write it. Create it.

You are your story. Your experiences are your story. Stop procrastinating and do it. If the story is in you and you have a desire to share…you will find the time. Life doesn't wait…why should you?
Shed the excuses and write!

If you're not a writer...the same applies. Shed the excuses and do what you're meant to do. The world awaits your signature piece.

Excerpt:
“Oh, Georgia! Lighten up!” Jersey shook her finger at Georgia. Georgia could tell her sister had been drinking not only by her behavior, but Jersey smelled of the beer or liquor. The two girls plus their fellow triplet, Virginia, were barely seventeen, and their step-sister Mallory was still sixteen. The four were about to be seniors in high school and their sibling was already an alcoholic.
Jersey and this male friend of hers both laughed then shushed each other like preschoolers about to get caught in an mischievous act. Georgia didn’t even know his name and didn’t remember ever seeing him before. Georgia rolled her eyes, knowing this was not going to get any better.

“How did he get in here?” Georgia asked. She put her hands on her hips, an action she had observed her mother doing over the past several years as all her older siblings had become teenagers. Georgia knew for a fact this boy did not enter through the front door of their house.

“How else?” Jersey slurred. “The window.”

“The window? We’re on the second floor!” Georgia put her head in her hands, exasperated. She’s been covering for her sister for more than two years now, but she wasn’t sure she could any longer. Jersey seemed to be getting herself deeper and deeper in trouble.

My review of Park Avenue by Christopher Smith

My Review of

Blurb

Sometimes, even after death, revenge carries on. Targets remain targets. People will die.

From the grave, one man's will delivers the directive. Kill George Redman. Kill Leana Redman. Kill every Redman. Finish the job, crush them all, do it swiftly, rob them of their hopes, steal away their dreams.

In Park Avenue, the sixth book in the hugely popular Fifth Avenue series (Fifth Avenue, Running of the Bulls, From Manhattan with Love, From Manhattan with Revenge, A Rush to Violence), the heat boils over as characters from each book collide in a single collective nightmare.

For the Redmans, the problem is that this one man, long since deceased, is not alone in his quest to see them dead. Others are conspiring against the Redmans, which leads to a punishing series of events as they fight for their lives.

Park Avenue, which skewers New York society to its core, is the most complicated and satisfying thriller yet by #1 international best-selling novelist, Christopher Smith.

My Review

The most difficult thing for a reader to do is to begin reading a series without having read the prequels, but that was not the case with Park Avenue. Christopher Smith carefully weaves a fast paced tale of mystery and suspense while offering just enough backstory to allow a new reader to feel fully vested in the characters and their plights.
The plot twists and edge of your seat thrills kept me turning the pages, while the occasional splashes of humor had me grinning from ear to ear. Mr. Smith delivered a fantastic tale of intrigue and revenge while keeping the story believable.
I quickly became a huge fan of the two assassins, but still found myself rooting for a positive outcome for the Redmans. Social standing, riches and fame are wonderful, unless you're a Redman on Park Avenue.
Although this was my first time to read Christopher Smith, it will not be my last. I've jumped on board the Smith train!

Can the savior be reborn?

The Prince and the Singularity by Pedro Barrento

The Prince and the Singularity

by Pedro Barrento

Amazon link

Book Blurb:

The Prince and the Singularity - A Circular Tale is a take on the Creation myth, drawing from different religious and philosophical sources and mixing them in an original, challenging and often very funny way. It is written in a multi-layered format, allowing it to be read both as a simple and entertaining fable and as a deeply philosophical work, full of hidden references and satire.

It’s the story of the Prince aka the Master aka Francis, who is more or less immortal and goes through the millennia fighting Desire and Rejection, the roots of all unhappiness and evil. He always fails until the moment he loses interest and decides to die, which he doesn't. Instead he gets promoted.

My Review

I very seldom read a book that carries me to another plane of existence as this one did. The philosophical highs and lows were absolutely stunning. The author's fairy-tale twist on creation and existence was mesmerizing and kept me glued to the pages. This story was beautifully crafted and offered an open-minded way of considering the world around us. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is enjoys viewing things from a new perspective.

When an interesting situation is thrown into their relationship, he must fight his jealousy and continue to woo the woman he loves. With the stress of the descendant and The Crimson Calamitous, will Scott be able to show Olivia just how much he cares for her before he loses her forever?

My Review

This easy to read series is intriguing, spell-binding, and fun. Felicia Tatum has taken magic, sorcery, mystery, and intense young love and combined them to create a spell binding tale that left me craving the next book in this series. After reading the first book (The White Aura) I immediately purchased the 'The Vessel' and dove right in. I was not disappointed.
The twists and turns in the first book intensify with this book and new twists are added. I enjoyed the way she describes scenes within the book without making it overbearing. I felt involved in the lives of the characters and found myself mentally urging them on.
Just when you think the solution to Olivia and Scott's problem is within reach, the dynamitic changes and creates an ever larger problem for the two of them. Are things what they seem or do we often close our eyes to the obvious? Will their love survive this new revelation or will hearts and souls be crushed? I eagerly await book 3. Thank you for another great story!

Book Blurb:

How do you live with the gut clenching truth that the one you love will die if you meet them? Twenty year old sorcerer Scott Tabors is learning how. After seeing seventeen year old Olivia Whitehead outside of a coffee shop, his heart will never be the same. He longs for her, he wants her, and he knows she will be his. They are heart mates. …but due to a curse on his family, he can’t meet her. Not yet. So for now, he visits her in her dreams. Her dreams where he can tell her everything but his name.

Olivia Whitehead is a typical junior in high school. She and her best friend are having the time of their lives, but she can’t help but notice the changes happening to her. Especially the changes in her heart after she begins dreaming about a mysterious dark haired young man. But what will happen when the school heartthrob decides he wants Olivia? Will she realize the dream man is real or will she move on?

My Review

The White Aura is a refreshingly light and easy read. Felicia Tatum does a spectacular job of combining magic and intrigue without losing focus on the plot. I really enjoyed this YA paranormal/romance.
Olivia is your typical 17 year old who enjoys all the typical things most young women do, but she harbors a secret that she doesn't even share with her best friend. Every night, a sexy stranger visits her dreams.
Scott is a sexy sorcerer who wants one thing—his heart mate, Olivia. The fact that a family curse stipulates that he can't meet her until 6 months before her 18th birthday doesn't keep him from bending the rules by visiting her in her dreams.
When an evil sorcerer sets his eyes on Olivia, Scott rushes to find a way to protect his love while trying to avoid the devastating results which would happen if he disobeys the family curse and meets Olivia in person. Can he protect his heart mate from a distance or will Olivia fall victim to the evil plans of an ancient sorcerer?
I devoured this book in a day and now I'm off to read the second book! Thanks for a great story Felicia!

Hell's Gate by Benjamin Daniels

My Review of

Hell's Gate by Benjamin Daniels

Amazon link

Blurb

The gates of Hell are open. Angels and Demons fight for our mortality and dominance of earth. The rapture diminishes the human population and very few remain to defend what God gave us. It is up to the Angels to fight the war, the humans to survive and the druids to protect the earth.
Cole wants nothing more than to be left alone until the war is over and see who wins. He doesn't care for rules of any kind and wants least of all to choose a side. Fate however, has different plans for him. His only friend is being held hostage by a Demon with a plan to win the war and return the earth to what it once was. It is up to him to rescue her with the help of a fallen Angel who comes to his aid to ensure his survival.
The Druids are the only ones who can save his friend, but they have an agenda of their own. The demon is demented but has the best intentions with what she believes. Cole finds himself lusting after the fallen Angel and must choose between her and saving his friend. The problem is that he doesn't know who he can trust.
Armageddon is here and Hell on earth has just begun.

My Review

I'm a sucker for religious speculation, but when you combine that with the elements of fantasy, it's hard to go wrong. Ben Daniels delivers a cast of fantastical creatures which leap from the page and fill your imagination. Just when I thought the author had created the ultimate villain, he out does himself and continues to bring new ones to life. I would have enjoyed a bit more dialogue, but overall I was intrigued by the creativity of the story and was transported to a world which exploded to life. Angels, demons, humans and Druids…oh my!

Review of 3 Days by Krista Madden

Review

3 Days by Krista Madden

Blurb:
Kara Laquin wanted nothing more than to forget. Forget the past, live in the present, and ignore the future. When a massive solar flare destroys all electronics and throws the country into chaos, Kara is nearly a whole state away from her lost love, Blaine. He can wait only three days before moving on. With access to fuel limited, she must do anything necessary to get to him before he is forced to move on, but society is crumbling around her. Looters and murderers prowl the cities during the day, and something even worse roams at night.

My Review
If you are looking for your next addiction, this is it! 3 Days was fun, easy to read and well crafted. The author wove a captivating dystopian tale that kept me turning the pages and the underlying sweet romance was perfect.
What would you do if the power went out and life as you knew it came to a screeching halt? Would you be able to do whatever it took to survive? Could you defy the odds and learn to adapt or would you refuse to believe the new reality and fall victim to your circumstances? That's what the young adults in this story had to face.
Kara's struggle to survive while attempting to locate her lost love was believable and it didn't take long before I was cheering her along. Blaine quickly became a guy that I wanted to know more about. I was pleased as his strength and compassion became evident and then I couldn't get enough of him. Jared was another one of my favorite characters and seemed like the type of guy you want to know and have on your side.
I have added this book to my list of favorites and eagerly await book 2 in the series.  Kudos Krista Madden! I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to teens and adults alike.

Review of Truths of the Soul (Soul Seers #3)

My review of Truths of the Soul (Soul Seers #3) by Rene Folsom

I'm in love with this series. Johan and Ella are my new favorite couple and I can't get enough! Rene Folsom has created a spellbinding story that makes me want more. 'Truths of the Soul' was a great addition to a series that has me eagerly anticipating the release of each installment.

Can dreams give the dreamer insight into their own fate? Can we discover love while our eyes are closed and remember that love once we open them? Well, you'll just have to read the series to find out!

I am officially addicted!

Review of Dating Husbands by Lindy Zart

My Review: Dating Husbands by Lindy Zart

Blurb

Bianca has three loves: her job, her cat, and Bloody Mary's. Not necessarily in that order. Life is good, the best, until Drew sabotages Bianca's black and white world and forces her to see the gray in it. Which is really annoying, as it disrupts her Bloody Mary drinking time.
Drew Montgomery left his old life to start a new one, but still the past continues to haunt him. Bianca Fisher makes him forget, gives him hope, and confounds him, all at once, and from just one encounter. Drew tells himself to run, to run away and fast, but his feet won't listen. Neither does his heart.

Review

I've been fortunate enough to read Lindy Zart's work before so I couldn't wait to peel back the cover on Dating Husbands. It only took a few paragraphs to know I wouldn't be disappointed. Lindy's writing style is easy to follow, flows from one scene to the next and keeps me turning pages.
Bianca's childhood and disastrous dating history leaves her embittered and cynical but her witty remarks and clever antics are hilarious. Drew's character was easy to like. I found myself standing in his corner, waving my virtual pom-poms and cheering for things to go his way.
The comical retorts and sassy dialogue were smartly written, giving me reason to smile throughout the entire read. I really enjoyed this book.

My Review Of: You're Right, My Love (Nebraska Holds) by Pamela Foreman

Blurb

In a perfect world, David and Annette would never have met. Their spouses would still be alive and well, supporting their families in their endeavors. Their children, seven between the two, would not be spiraling into deep depression with each passing moment.
But their world is not perfect and both must struggle with their spouse's deaths, raise their children and deal with their new-found relationship with each other. Can David and Annette learn to love each other despite their differences? Can they look into the future instead of the past? Will their own children force them to part?

My Review

Pamela weaves a sweet story that many families face today.
What happens to a woman with five children when she loses her husband to cancer? What happens to the children left behind?
Can a man learn to love again and successfull...
y raise his own children when his wife passes away?
Ms. Foreman tackles the emotional struggles that follow loss and the difficulty of continuing on without your life partner. The approach was so delicate that I found myself cheering for both the children and the parents. I could relate to the parental conflicts and I found myself wanted the surviving spouses to move forward with their lives and learn to live again.
This wasn't a typical read for me. It's been ages since I've read fiction that didn't include paranormal, fantasy, mystery, or intense encounters but I enjoyed this incredibly charming story.

Editor vs. copy proofer

Editor vs. copy proofer or AKA copy editor. Why do you need both?

As an Indie author I asked myself that same question and after 3 books that I know the answer. I want my car clean. I have someone wash it, wipe it down, and it looks amazing. There is only one problem. What about the minute details? The most awesome editor in the universe is just like the most awesome power washer in the world…a minute detail might be missed. My readers deserve more than to come through my carwash to find that bug guts are still stuck to their windshield. That's right. I said it. Editors fine tune, make it right, and make it flow…but the details behind the copy proofer is the "wax." They're the ones that find a misused word, the missed a vs. an; the missed the or then. Don't ever forego the editing, but if you bother to wash your car, don't forget to wax so it will really shine!

Review: Ordinary (The Anything But Series)

Amazon link
Blurb:

There are three kinds of people in the world: those who are alive, those who are undead, and those who can see the undead.

Honor Rochester found out she's one of the three, and it's not the one she would prefer to be.

She can accept her fate and live as is decided for her. Or not live at all.

My Review:

I love discovering new authors and I'm glad to say that this one is a keeper!

I read this book without reading the synopsis because sometimes you just have to go for it. I didn't have the slightest clue as to the storyline but let me say, "Wow." I was pleasantly surprised.

From the hallways of a small town school, to the top secret facilities where strange things occur, Ordinary takes the reader on a journey unlike any other.

I immediately connected with Honor's need to protect and care for those around her and caught myself wishing her in and out of situations. The desire to learn Christian's fate kept the pages turning, while Ryker's confusion made me want to slap sense into him. Isaac's internal struggle instantly captivated me and made him one of my favorite characters.

I look forward to reading more Lindy Zart!

A must!!

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

This book is so beautifully written, that page one pulled me in and the love affair continued throughout.
I immediately fell in love with Ismae. Her past is broken, but her spirit is strong. She is by far, my favorite heroine to date!

Duval is my now my favorite hero and was perfectly described. He's strong, commanding, and fierce; yet so gentle and kind.
The twists, turns, and struggles that the characters go through as they attempt to save the duchess' kingdom is heart wrenching and powerful. The author took me into the world of the past and I didn't want it to end. In fact, I think I screamed, "No," at the end. If you enjoy historical fiction with a paranormal flare, you will love this book!

Review of Croak by Gina Daminco

Croak by Gina Damico

I've read very few books with reapers in them, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I immediately fell in love with the town of Croak. The unusual street and building names added a quirky element, and the witty retorts of the characters kept the pages turning.

Lex is a difficult teen who can't seem stay out of trouble. Her short fuse is easily ignited and she's prone to fighting and swearing. Having exhausted all efforts, her parents ship her off to spend the summer with her mysterious Uncle Mort. Lex immediately learns that she's not the toughest kid in town and adults aren't always passive.

Friendships bloom as she struggles to accept the duties of her new reaper job, and it doesn't take long before she realizes that there are far worse things in life than having a family that loves her.

It took me a while to warm up the author's style of writing, but once I did, I enjoyed it. The storyline is interesting, the humor is frequent, the world that the author created becomes believable, and the entire town of Croak makes me want to move there immediately.

Review of The Chronicles of Fire & Ice

The Chronicles of Fire & Ice

Fire and Ice indeed!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first started reading The Chronicles of Fire and Ice, but since I'm such a huge fan of angels and academies I couldn't put it down. I read it in one evening. How can you go wrong at a school filled with angels?

Fallen angels have mated with humans and created a race called Nephilim. Because of this, the world is changing. Both the human race and the angelic race are dwindling and archangels exist only in stories. However, legend says that a half archangel born from fire will save the world.

The last thing Scarlett expected when she came to the academy was to meet two amazingly powerful brothers or to fall in love. She only intended to learn more about her Traits and her lineage.

When evil forces begin to reign down on the academy and on Scarlett, she must decide if she'll risk exposing the truth behind her lineage, or protect the man that has her heart. Is being cast from heaven worth love?
This was a fun, easy read which transported me into a world unlike any I've read! I can't wait for book two!
